O'Neil was a contestant on the third season of Canadian Idol in the early year of 2005, while in high school. She made it to the 100th round because the judges were thrilled at her singing performance. Her performance was highly applauded by the jury. However, O'Neil suffered a significant loss in the Top 10 as well as the Top 9 final weeks when she received votes for the top 3, and bottom 2. The judges were astonished at the result and exhorted fans to vote for those with great singing talent similar to Melissa. With consistently excellent performances from that point forward, O'Neil never again finished in the bottom three. O'Neil, Rex Goudie and Werner presented two incredible performances in September 2005. Werner reportedly said that headlines would say O'Neil had defeated Goudie and become the 3rd Canadian Idol. She was the first female, and youngest winner in the time of the show. O'Neil was contacted by Canadian Prime Minister Paul Martin congratulating her on the success of Canadian Idol immediately.
